Sera Gamble, the executive producer who co-created the You series with Greg Berlanti, will be stepping down as showrunner for Season 5. This is because she wants to concentrate on developing other projects. The showrunner duties for Season 5 will now be taken over by Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo, who have been writers for the series since Seasons 1 and 2 respectively.
What to expect from You Season 5
Gamble expressed her gratitude to her co-creator, Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, Berlanti Productions, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros, and Netflix. She also expressed her pride in what the team has achieved, and her excitement to watch and support them as they continue Joe Goldberg's twisted journey.
Penn Badgley, who plays Joe Goldberg in the series, was described as "gifted and thoughtful" by Gamble. She feels fortunate to have worked with him and the talented cast, writers, producers, directors, and crew who have all contributed to making You a success. Here’s what she said:
“As I step back from day-to-day showrunning to focus on new projects, I’m immensely grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment, and our steadfast partners at Warner Bros and Netflix.”
“Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast and crew has been an honor and ridiculously fun. And I feel lucky to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgely. I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished and feel privileged to pass the torch. I’m excited to watch and support the You team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion.”
The latest season of You ended with a dramatic murder mystery as an undercover killer targeted members of an elite circle. The second half of season 4 introduced some significant twists, leaving fans eagerly anticipating season 5, set to be the show's final installment. Showrunner Sera Gamble has teased a "delightfully twisted conclusion" and promised that they won't be running the show into the ground.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gamble said: "We have an idea for season 5 that we’re excited about. It was never anyone’s intention to run this one into the ground.”
"When we’re done, we’ll be done. And we’ll pack it up. Even in the early conversations with Penn, the idea was not to crank out episodes forever; it’s to feel like we have told the complete story."
Star of the show, Penn Badgley, echoed Gamble's sentiments, suggesting that season 5 will be the last and will bring a satisfying and beautiful conclusion to the story.
"Where I want him to go should he continue and what I want to happen is, I actually think, what the showrunners are planning to happen," said Badgley. "So I can't tell you, unfortunately."
He continued: "But I can tell you that, should there be a season 5, I think it will bring it all to a really, really satisfying and beautiful conclusion."
The plot of season 5 remains under wraps, but season 4 ended with Joe returning to New York and finally admitting to himself that he is a killer. Unfortunately for him, he's now famous and can't get away with his murders as easily as before. With Joe's new notoriety making things tricky for him, it seems like season 5 will finally see Joe face the consequences of his actions.
The season ended on a cliffhanger, with Joe seemingly at peace with his dark side and ready to use his resources to "help" in some way. It's unclear what this means, but fans are scared to find out. Regardless, fans are eagerly awaiting the final season to see how the story of Joe Goldberg will conclude.
You Season 5 cast
As of now, no official announcements have been made regarding the cast for You Season 5, except for the fact that Penn Badgley will return as Joe. In season 4, the show introduced a new cast for Joe's London adventures, leaving behind Love and Ryan from season 3. Season 4 wrapped up the storylines for most of the new characters, so it's unlikely they'll return. However, it's possible that Nadia, played by Amy-Leigh Hickman, may seek revenge against Joe and make a comeback. In an interview with Digital Spy, Hickman expressed her willingness to return for season 5, saying, "I would love to come back and play her again."
It's possible that Marienne could return for You Season 5, but as you mentioned, given her past experiences with Joe, it's unlikely she would willingly associate with him again. As for Kate, it's not certain whether she will return for season five, as nothing has been confirmed about the cast yet. However, it's possible that Joe's relationship with her could continue to play a role in the upcoming season.
