Sex Education, one of Netflix's most cherished comedy series, maybe conclude soon. Despite being renewed for a fourth season just three weeks after the third season premiered, the departure of several cast members after Season 3 has left doubts about its future. With more cast members potentially leaving after Season 4, it appears there is little reason for it to continue beyond that point.
It was previously disclosed that Simone Ashley (who played Olivia Hanan in Seasons 1-3), Tanya Reynolds (who played Lily Iglehart in Seasons 1-3), Rakhee Thakrar (who played Emily Sands in Seasons 1-3), and Patricia Allison (who played Ola Nyman in Seasons 1-3) had all left the cast of Netflix's Sex Education after Season 3. In a recent announcement, Emma Mackey, who portrayed Maeve Wiley, revealed that she will not be returning for a potential fifth season.
The actor, who recently finished filming for the fourth season of the show, shared the news at the BAFTAs where she won the Rising Star Award. ''Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week! No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve,'' she told RadioTimes.
Butterfield and Mackey will certainly be returning to reprise their roles in Season 4, and the addition of Schitt's Creek star Dan Levy to the cast is a significant positive development. However, as the cast members portray teenagers' age, we anticipate more departures from the show.
Sex Education made its debut on Netflix in 2019 and quickly gained a devoted fanbase. The show is a comedy that revolves around the socially awkward protagonist Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), a high school student whose mother Jean (Gillian Anderson) is a sex therapist. Along with his classmate Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey), Otis establishes a sex clinic at their school to offer love and sex advice to their peers. As the seasons' progress, Otis and Maeve begin to develop romantic feelings for each other, with their will-they, won't-they dynamic becoming one of the show's central plotlines.
It is impossible for Sex Education to continue without Maeve, who is just as critical to the show as Otis and arguably the most beloved character in the series. With the departure of several cast members and the actors aging, there appears to be little reason to extend the show beyond its fourth season. Netflixlife Netflixlife also predicted the same that the show may conclude after Season 4.
