The crime-drama-psychological thriller Mindhunter on Netflix left fans heartbroken when it was announced in January 2020 that there would be no season 3. However, there was a shine of hope as it was later revealed that the series was merely on hold. A source close to the streaming giant claims that director David Fincher may be considering bringing the show back.
According to a source close to Netflix, David Fincher and Netflix are now in discussions about restarting Mindhunter and realizing their goal of producing season 3. Following the David Fincher for Mindhunter Season 3 is back on, fans are buzzing out for the updates.
In October of last year, Netflix sent fans into a frenzy with a tweet teasing something special from David Fincher. This fueled speculation that a long-awaited Mindhunter Season 3 was finally in production. However, it was later revealed that the project was actually a docuseries titled "Voir," which focused on celebrating cinema through visual essays. Despite the disappointment, fans continue to eagerly anticipate any new projects from the renowned director David Fincher.
But, fans may recall that David Fincher initially intended to produce five seasons of the series Mindhunter. This leaves room for the possibility of his return as the show's director in the future. Actor Holt McCallany is hopeful that he will get the chance to perform in all five seasons of Mindhunter. After seeing the fans' positive reviews, he rather thinks that the series could have five seasons.
If Mindhunter Season 3 returns there would be no shortage of real-life serial killers to use as inspiration. The show follows two FBI agents and a psychologist as they study and talk to some of the most famous serial killers. There are many interesting cases they haven't explored yet, and the characters make the show very exciting to watch.
Furthermore, the director of the first two episodes of Mindhunter Season 1, Asif Kapadia, has encouraged fans to show their support by making enough noise and letting Netflix know of their interest in the show.
Last year in an interview with Collider, Mindhunter director Andrew Dominik stated that the show would have continued with Season 3 if it hadn't been put on indefinite hold. He revealed that the planned plot for season 3 would have taken the show's FBI profilers to Hollywood, where they would have interacted with famous filmmakers to discuss their findings.
Andrew Dominik said, "What they were going to do with Season 3 was they were going to go [to] Hollywood. So one of them was going to be hooking up with Jonathan Demme and the other one was going to be hooking up with Michael Mann. And it was all going to be about profiling making it into the sort of zeitgeist, the public consciousness. It would've been... That was the season everyone was really waiting for to do, with when they sort of get out of the basement and start."
It has been three years after Netflix announced that the potential for a third season was on indefinite hold and still no word from the streaming platform regarding the future of Mindhunter. While it is uncertain whether season 3 will happen, fans are keeping their fingers crossed. Currently, the likelihood of a third season seems low. Nevertheless, fans remain hopeful and continue to wait for a positive announcement from Netflix or the creators of Mindhunter.
