Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 5 recap

Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 5 shows Thorfinn recalling the time when Askeladd agreed to a duel with him that fans saw in Season 1 overall episode 22.  Askeladd promises to reveal how to kill someone you despise after being severely beaten because he lost control.

Askeladd recalls being a young slave's son in Jutland, one of many children sired by the Viking leader Olaf but not named like his legitimate children.

His mother was ill, but she frequently spoke of Artorius, the mythical hero from the far west who would free them from slavery. When she was delirious and about to be murdered by Olaf, Askeladd attacked him but was easily defeated, despite impressing his father with his ability. Olaf took him to the "hall" to live with his men, where he trained and learned to fight alongside the legitimate sons.

When Olaf let down his guard two years later, Askeladd killed him and his consort with another son's sword, who was then blamed for the murder. Askeladd then revealed how he had been manipulating Thorfinn to achieve his own goals, leaving Thorfinn enraged and frustrated with his lack of control over his own life.
