Fans are already aware of The Last Kingdom’s renewal for a Season 5. Netflix renewed the fifth season on July 7, 2020. The upcoming season is likely to be based on the 9th and 10th series of the novel 'The Saxon Stories' – 'The Warriors of the Storm' and 'The Flame Bearer'.
Unfortunately, the viewers have to wait a little longer to watch The Last Kingdom Season 5. Recently, Netflix has announced the full list of movies and series to be out in April 2021. The Last Kingdom Season 5 is not on the list. However, fans should not fret because the historical fiction series will stream on Netflix this year or at the beginning of 2022.
Reportedly, the filming of The Last Kingdom Season 5 was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no official statement about The Last Kingdom Season 5 release, however, according to Netflix Life, “there’s a lot going on with production, especially with the major battle sequences that happen every season. That all takes time to make and put together and make it look really good.”
In The Last Kingdom Season 5, Uhtred (played by Alexander Dreymon) will have to 'face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss' in order to achieve his destiny, according to a synopsis of the season released earlier.
In Season 4, we saw Brida (Emily Cox) turning against her childhood friend Uhtred. As reported by Express.UK, it seems the upcoming season will bring more changes to Brida’s character. Brida and Uhtred grew up together. They had a good relationship and they were in love for a short period. However, Uhtred’s loyalty to the Saxons would not go down well with his childhood friend Brida. In fact, Brida decided to destroy everything that Uhtred loves.
The Last Kingdom Season 5 will continue to focus on this part of the story. Alexander Dreymon said they are working on the story.
"We're faced with that problem now, getting into season five where Uhtred is technically… I think he starts at 54 and ends up at 60 in the books. That's a problem right now because how do we make it look like Uhtred has aged without it looking comical? We're working on it," Alexander Dreymon added.
Moreover, The Last Kingdom Season 5 is likely to continue to follow the amalgamation of England. In the previous season, we saw Aethelflaed (Millie Brady) falling out with her lover Uhtred over the Mercian throne.
Fans will have to wait a few more months to watch The Last Kingdom Season 5. If filming continues without any hurdles, the historical drama would release on Netflix in the second half of 2021 or in early 2022.
