Tezpur University is engulfed in turmoil as agitators vow to maintain a shutdown until formal action is taken against Vice Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh. Demonstrators, organized by the Tezpur University United Forum, have staged protests since mid-September, alleging corruption and irregularities under Singh's governance.
Efforts by a Ministry of Education team, led by Secretary Vineet Joshi, were thwarted when they were prevented from leaving the university premises over the weekend. A written assurance from the Joint Secretary of Higher Education suggested a time-bound inquiry into Singh's actions, yet students and staff continue their demands for official confirmation and Singh's removal.
The university has been at a standstill since the indefinite shutdown began on November 29, with all academic activities, including end-term exams, canceled. The standoff highlights ongoing governance issues and has drawn support from university associations and faculty, who are united in their call for accountability.
