In a decisive move, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose removed Dr. Bhaskar Gupta from his position as the officiating vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University. The Raj Bhavan announced the immediate effect of the decision, which comes ahead of Gupta's scheduled retirement on March 31.
Governor Bose, who is also the chancellor of state universities, had originally appointed Gupta to the role. In a statement released on March 27, the Governor's secretariat clarified that Gupta's authorization to perform the duties of vice-chancellor has been withdrawn, effective immediately. The decision, approved by the Chancellor, has been communicated to the university's registrar for necessary action.
The leadership change occurs as Jadavpur University remains without a permanent vice-chancellor for more than a year and a half. The academic community, including the Jadavpur University Teachers' Association, has voiced concerns regarding the uncertainty affecting university operations. Manojit Mondal of the TMC-leaning West Bengal College and University Professors' Association criticized the move, highlighting alleged inconsistencies in the application of governance standards across universities.
