Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of ragging-related complaints in medical colleges for 2024, with 33 cases, followed by Bihar with 17, Rajasthan with 15, and Madhya Pradesh with 12. Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel conveyed this information to the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has implemented strict measures to curb ragging incidents, including regular monitoring through video conferences with Deans and Principals of medical institutions. The NMC mandates that these institutions annually submit Anti-Ragging reports to ensure adherence to protocols. Non-compliance could result in harsh penalties, such as withdrawal of recognition or other punitive actions, to maintain a safe academic atmosphere, according to Patel's statement.
In efforts to foster a zero-tolerance environment against ragging, the government has enacted comprehensive measures. These include adherence to the Prevention and Prohibition of Ragging in Medical Colleges and Institutions Regulations, 2021. Additional measures encompass the installation of CCTV cameras, dissemination of anti-ragging information in brochures, and establishment of the NMC Anti-Ragging Cell and online portals for lodging complaints, ensuring robust vigilance and safety for students.
