In the heart of Belgrade, thousands gathered on Monday to voice their opposition to the development of a luxury compound on a historic site, highlighting tensions surrounding its lease to an investment company linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
These protests have intensified following 16 fatalities caused by a railway station roof collapse, sparking allegations of corruption and negligence. They present a considerable challenge to the administration of President Aleksandar Vucic, who has been a dominant political figure in Serbia for the past 12 years.
The buildings in question, which were damaged during NATO's 1999 bombing campaign against Yugoslavia, have become the symbol of this concern. Designed by Serbian architect Nikola Dobrovic, they bear witness to a turbulent past many Serbians believe should be preserved as a cultural monument.
