In a bid to establish Kerala as a global education hub, the state's Higher Education Minister R Bindu has strongly defended the decision to allow private universities. The initiative aims to leverage private investment alongside a Rs 6,000 crore effort to bolster public universities.
Speaking at the state Assembly, Minister Bindu presented the Kerala State Private Universities Bill, 2025, as a strategic move to diversify higher education opportunities. Emphasizing regulatory compliance, she noted that private universities would require ten acres of land and a Rs 25 crore fund, ensuring quality and social justice.
Facing opposition criticism, Bindu challenged their past track record in education, dismissing concerns about UGC violations and affirming the state's commitment to social justice. The Bill ensures government oversight in university councils, protecting democratic rights within institutions.
