In an ongoing demonstration, students of Presidency University in Kolkata have been staging a sit-in for five consecutive days. Their demands include the immediate conduct of student union elections and an active placement cell to better serve student needs.
The protest, organized by around 50 members of the Student Federation of India (SFI), a student wing of CPI(M), has persisted for over 117 hours as of 4 pm Monday, with participants expressing grievances over the lack of student representation for several years.
An SFI spokesperson emphasized the protest's role in safeguarding student rights, while university officials noted that the decision on union polls rests with the state Higher Education Department and claimed ongoing efforts to facilitate student placements.
