Protests at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have reached a boiling point, pressuring Vice Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla to temporarily step down. The campus, home to nearly 5,000 students, is rife with discontent over administrative leadership.
Shukla's leave, spanning until November 29, follows an escalating wave of dissatisfaction. HE faces criticism for not firing an 'incompetent' registrar and assistant registrar. His decision comes as the Union Ministry of Education initiates a probe into the alleged mismanagement within NEHU, appointing former UGC chairman Prof D P Singh to lead the investigation.
The inquiry committee has been given a two-week deadline to deliver its findings, as the protests—which included a hunger strike and cases of hospitalization—continue to disrupt the university workflow. Tensions remain high after the VC's residence was vandalized, although no injuries were reported.
