Nobel laureate and Trinity College Fellow Dr. Venki Ramakrishnan has endorsed a pioneering £48 million initiative by Trinity College and the University of Cambridge that aims to provide fully funded PhD opportunities. This programme seeks to reverse trends of declining funding for PhD research in both science and humanities.

The Trinity Cambridge Research Studentships (TCRS) programme is expected to support up to 300 PhD students over the next decade, starting with its first cohort in October 2025. The initiative, as praised by Ramakrishnan, is designed to attract the world's best research talent to Cambridge.

Cambridge University's Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education, Professor Bhaskar Vira, emphasized the importance of such funding in maintaining the UK's leading position in research. With an increase in funding opportunities, the programme also aims to enhance Cambridge's significant contribution to the UK economy, while addressing global challenges through cutting-edge research.
