Canada has made a swift policy shift by discontinuing its Student Direct Stream (SDS) program, renowned for expedited visa processing for international students. This action, effective immediately, is set to affect numerous students globally, particularly those from India.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's administration cited instances of system abuse as a reason for the termination. In a previous announcement, Trudeau indicated a reduction in international student permits by 35 percent this year, with a further 10 percent decrease anticipated for the next year.
The axing of the program comes amidst heightened diplomatic tensions between Canada and India, which remains a significant source of foreign students for Canadian institutions. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada stressed the need to foster equal opportunity and maintain the integrity of the immigration system while also addressing potential vulnerabilities among students.
