UK's Elite Math Schools: Pioneering STEM Education
In 2024, King's College London Mathematics School led A-Level rankings by focusing on STEM subjects. These specialist schools bridge the gap between secondary and higher education, offering rigorous programs and university-style learning. Despite their success, limited research has been done on their operations and student experiences.

In 2024, King's College London Mathematics School topped the Times' A-Level rankings, excelling in three core subjects: maths, further maths, and physics. The specialist school achieved outstanding results, with 76.2% of students securing an A* and nearly all attaining between A*-B grades.
These math schools, a concept devised under the Conservative-Liberal Democrat government in 2011, aim to bridge the gap between secondary education and university-level studies, focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The policy was inspired by dedicated maths schools in Russia, with UK versions requiring sponsorship by highly selective universities.
Despite their success and growing number, with more schools set to open, little research exists on their operation or impact. Ongoing doctoral research seeks to explore these schools' unique educational approach and the experiences of their students as they transition to higher education.
