The government is preparing to unveil a new skill voucher system, announced Atul Kumar Tiwari, Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, on Thursday. The initiative, aimed at enhancing the country's skill development ecosystem, will focus on upgrading 1,000 industrial training institutes (ITIs).
During Ficci's Global Skills Summit 2024, Tiwari outlined the government's ambitious plan to convert 200 ITIs into hub institutions, with an additional 800 serving as spoke facilities. However, detailed information regarding the skill voucher system remains undisclosed.
The Secretary also highlighted two significant changes in India's skill development approach: the integration of skilling and education credits under the National Credit Framework and the introduction of apprenticeship-embedded degree programmes. Tiwari called for stronger collaboration between industry, academia, and government to align skill development efforts with industry needs.
