Two teenage tribal students died after getting electrocuted at a government-run hostel in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, an official said on Wednesday.

The state government has suspended the superintendent of the hostel and an assistant commissioner of the Tribal Welfare Department as part of a probe into the incident.

The tragic event occurred on Tuesday night at the Senior Students Hostel managed by the state Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department at Ringnod, approximately 50 km from the district headquarters.

A live electricity wire fell near a water tank. When Vikas and Akash, both aged 17, went to fetch water, they came in contact with the wire, resulting in the fatal electrocution, according to assistant commissioner Brijkant Shukla.

Immediately taken to the hospital, the students were declared dead upon arrival. Subsequently, Shukla was suspended. Madhya Pradesh Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah has ordered a comprehensive investigation and urged for the registration of a First Information Report against those responsible.

Further directives include preventative action at all hostels to prevent future incidents. Indore Divisional Commissioner Deepak Singh suspended assistant commissioner Brijkant Shukla, while District Collector Priyank Mishra suspended hostel superintendent Bansingh Kannauj.

A show-cause notice was also issued to the Block Education Officer of Sardarpur. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav approved financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased students, the release stated.
