All schools in Assam's Kamrup Metropolitan district, including the city of Guwahati, have been ordered to shut down for four days due to the extreme heatwave plaguing the area.
The MET Department reported that the state capital reached a maximum temperature of 37.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday, significantly higher than normal levels. The minimum temperature also exceeded typical readings.
According to an official statement from the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), several students have experienced ill-health and fainting episodes due to the excessive heat and dehydration. Consequently, all government, provincialized, and private schools in the district will be closed from September 24 to 27, 2024.
