The Odisha government has inked a groundbreaking agreement with the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (AYJNISHD-D) to empower the hearing-impaired community by providing vital training.

This initiative targets 4000 deaf students and 800 teachers across 55 special schools, aiming to create a cadre of 100 proficient sign language interpreters, according to the Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Department.

Officials highlight the severe shortage of interpreters in Odisha, impacting access to essential services and educational opportunities for individuals with hearing impairments. SSEPD minister Nityananda Gond emphasized the project's focus on enhancing communication, inclusivity, and overall well-being. SSEPD principal secretary Bishnupada Sethi added that the initiative will facilitate job placement for trained interpreters by identifying potential employers and organizing networking events.
