Students of government schools in Karnataka will now be served eggs six days a week as part of the midday meal scheme. The move follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Saturday by the Azim Premji Foundation and the Government of Karnataka to support the nutritional enrichment of the state's midday meal program in government and government-aided schools for three years.

Currently, the program provides eggs on two days of the week. With the Foundation's support, eggs will now be available on all six school days, substantially boosting the nutrition for students. For those students who do not consume eggs due to cultural preferences, a high-nutrition supplement will be provided. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah lauded the initiative as a "historic" step toward student nutrition and education quality. He emphasized the importance of providing quality food for mental health and educational success.

The MoU commits the Foundation to supply eggs for four additional days each week, benefiting 55 lakh students from Grade 1 to 10 in both government and government-aided schools. The Foundation's efforts will include collaboration with the Commissioner of School Education and Literacy (CSE) to ensure high-quality eggs reach each child. The initiative aims to improve the overall nutritional status and cognitive development of students, laying a strong foundation for their future.
