The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) has inked a pact with the University of Leeds (UoL) aimed at enhancing academic and research cooperation through the joint supervision of PhD programs in various fields, including civil engineering and biological sciences, the institute stated on Tuesday.

The joint supervision agreement was formalized during the University of Leeds' 25-year celebrations in Delhi on June 28, with representation from an IIT KGP delegation.

'IIT KGP is thrilled to partner with the University of Leeds to explore diverse academic opportunities,' stated IIT KGP's Dean of International Relations, Professor Rabibrata Mukherjee. He reported that activities like joint research projects, student and faculty exchanges, and collaborative thesis guidance are already underway.

'The key areas of initial collaboration identified are clean energy for all, sustainable transport, resilient infrastructure, healthcare and well-being, chemicals and waste, and water and sanitation. These align with several United Nations sustainable development goals,' he added.

This agreement aims to benefit doctoral students by offering mentorship and guidance from faculty at both institutions, enhancing their academic and research experience.

IIT KGP also plans to participate in the Leeds International Partners Conference in December 2024. This inaugural event aims to bolster the existing collaboration and facilitate engagement on shared academic interests, noted an institute spokesperson.
