In a landmark initiative, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the state government will offer monthly stipends to female students from class 11 to post-graduation under the new 'Nijut Moina' scheme. This strategic move is aimed at curbing child marriages and promoting financial independence among girls.

Announced at a press conference, the scheme has been approved by the cabinet, which projects a budget of Rs 1,500 crore over five years. 'Nijut Moina' is set to benefit approximately 10 lakh girls. Married girls will generally be excluded, except those pursuing postgraduate studies.

The stipend amounts will vary by educational level: Rs 1,000 per month for classes 11 and 12, Rs 1,250 for degree students, and Rs 2,500 for postgraduate students. Exemptions include daughters of ministers, MLAs, MPs, and students in private colleges. The funds will be distributed for 10 months each year, skipping the summer vacation months of June and July.
