Global Economic Turbulence Strains Gig Workers Worldwide
Global economic challenges and rising fuel costs are impacting gig workers worldwide, says Michiko Miyamoto of the ILO. She stresses the need for global solutions to ensure sustainable incomes for these workers, despite economic slowdown and inflation. India's efforts to protect informal workers receive praise.
At a critical time of global economic uncertainty, gig and platform workers are facing substantial challenges. Michiko Miyamoto, the Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Decent Work Technical Support Team for South Asia and Country Office for India, highlighted these issues, emphasizing rising fuel costs as a significant factor in an interview with ANI.
Miyamoto pointed out that the difficulties faced by gig workers are not confined to India but represent a global problem requiring a collaborative regional and international solution. She asserted the necessity for joint efforts by governments and stakeholders to maintain business operations while securing sustainable income for workers in the platform economy.
Notably, Miyamoto highlighted the need for safe working conditions, particularly for those operating in harsh environments like the intense heat affecting gig workers in India. With India's progressing labor reforms and initiatives to extend social security to informal workers, she commended the country's 'unique efforts'. The upcoming International Labour Conference in Geneva intends to address these issues, discussing international labor standards, definitions, and worker protections.
