Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay criticized the Rs 3 per litre increase in fuel prices, deeming it 'unacceptable' and requesting its rollback. He argued that the price revision would have a detrimental impact on multiple societal sectors.
Vijay accused union government oil marketing companies of not reducing prices to match global crude oil rates, instead opting to 'take the profits.' He further noted that the price hike was implemented after elections in five states.
The price surge comes as global crude oil prices have risen over 50%, following US-Israeli strikes on Iran that affected energy flow through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipment route. Fuel prices are now at their highest since May 2022.
