Controversy Erupts Over India-US Trade Deal

The Congress party has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration, alleging that the recently inked India-US interim trade deal undermines India's sovereignty. This agreement, Congress claims, could devastate the livelihoods of millions of Indian farmers by opening the market to American agricultural imports.
Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala criticized the Modi government for allegedly compromising India's energy security and digital autonomy, describing the move as sacrificing the country's self-reliance for American interests. The agreement reportedly includes provisions for reducing farmer subsidies and approving genetically modified crops.
Further allegations include that on US pressure India agreed to cease buying Russian crude oil, although it had saved India significant money. Surjewala questioned whether this trade agreement truly serves India's national interests or if it is coerced under US demands.
