Maharashtra's New 24/7 Trade Policy: A Step Towards Global Aspirations
The Maharashtra government allows 24/7 operation for shops and commercial entities, excluding excise-licensed liquor establishments. This policy boosts business flexibility and local economies. Supporters say it aligns with Mumbai's global city aspirations. Criticism arose from Shiv Sena's Aaditya Thackeray, who questioned the GR's necessity given existing policies.

The Maharashtra government has ushered in a transformative change by permitting shops and commercial establishments to operate 24 hours a day. This includes residential hotels, restaurants, eateries, and entertainment venues across the state.
Nonetheless, a recent Government Resolution (GR) specifies that venues dealing with liquor sales, such as wine shops and beer bars, must adhere to restricted operational hours. Local administration and police departments are tasked with rigorously enforcing these rules.
This development has sparked a dialogue. Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray expressed skepticism, highlighting a similar policy from 2020. Meanwhile, the Hotel and Restaurant Association (Western India) praised the decision, pointing to its potential to enhance business operations, job creation, and Mumbai's global standing.
