A new rail line connecting Jammu to Poonch via Akhnur and Rajouri has been surveyed, with the project costs evaluated at Rs 22,771 crore. Despite the ambitious scope, forecasts indicate low traffic, raising doubts about its feasibility, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw's statement in the Rajya Sabha.

In response to BJP MP Ghulam Ali's enquiry about the proposed railway connection, Vaishnaw discussed the project's status. He emphasized that railway planning is an ongoing process, influenced by logistics, connectivity needs, and economic factors.

The completed Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link signifies progress in regional rail infrastructure. However, the Jammu-Poonch line's future hinges on addressing financial constraints and strategic justifications, as competing demands and funding challenges persist.
