AMNS India announced the launch of its inaugural scrap processing facility in Maharashtra, marking a significant step in its Rs 350-crore investment initiative. Located in Khopoli, this 120 KTPA unit is the first of four planned facilities designed to enhance the availability of high-quality scrap for steel production in India.
The initiative aligns with India's ambition to increase the proportion of scrap metal in steel production to 50% by 2047, explained Akshaya Gujral, Executive Director of Downstream Operations at AMNS India. This development is pivotal for fortifying the infrastructure and ecosystem necessary to support this target.
With goals set in its 2024 Climate Action Report, AMNS India intends to escalate its scrap mix in steel manufacturing to over 10% by 2030. As a joint venture between Luxembourg's ArcelorMittal and Japan's Nippon Steel, AMNS India's efforts contribute significantly to formalizing the domestic scrap industry and advancing sustainability efforts.
