On a tragic day at New Delhi Railway Station, a stampede claimed the lives of 18 passengers. The incident on February 15 coincided with the sale of 11,099 platform tickets, revealed Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This figure, he noted, was just 11% above the average daily sales.
In response to a query in the Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw addressed concerns about platform capacity, assuring that it was sufficient to handle the passenger load, despite the increased ticket sales. This reassurance came amid demands for more detailed data from Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Adhikari Deepak.
Vaishnaw explained the purpose of platform tickets, emphasizing they are meant for companions of special passengers, such as the elderly and patients. He also highlighted that platform tickets are valid for limited durations, aligning with existing platform accommodation capacity.
