Ukrzaliznytsia, the largest cargo carrier in Ukraine, announced a large-scale cyber attack on its online freight services on Tuesday. The rail company had earlier reported an IT system failure on Sunday, urging passengers to buy tickets on-site or directly on trains.
Since Russia's invasion in 2022, trains have been crucial for passenger travel and the delivery of essential goods in Ukraine. The company confirmed the attack was targeted and had affected both passenger and freight services. Immediate measures included reverting to paper-based document management, with all employees briefed on procedures.
Anonymous Ukrainian security officials suggest Russia may be behind the attack. Ukrzaliznytsia is guiding commercial entities on how to manage freight under the altered conditions, focusing on export towards ports and the western border.
