The Indian government is taking decisive steps to extend healthcare coverage to gig and platform workers, promising a substantial Rs 5 lakh health insurance under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This was confirmed by Sumita Dawra, Secretary, Labour and Employment Ministry, in a conversation with ANI.
The gig economy in India is witnessing significant growth, with sectors like ridesharing, delivery, and professional services leading the charge. According to NITI Aayog, the number of gig workers is predicted to surpass one crore by 2024-25 and reach 2.35 crore by 2029-30.
The Union Budget of 2025-26 marked a turning point for gig workers, introducing provisions for their registration on the e-Shram portal, issuance of identity cards, and insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the inclusion of gig workers in social security schemes, reflecting the government's commitment to improving their welfare.
