India is grappling with a severe public health concern as road accidents claim the lives of over 1,88,000 people each year, resulting in a loss of 3% of the nation's GDP, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated.

Speaking at the AMCHAM's 'Technology Interventions For Road Safety: US-India Partnership' event in New Delhi, Gadkari highlighted road accidents as a critical national issue.

Citing inadequate Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) as a major factor, he announced cash incentives to encourage bystander assistance to accident victims, as a measure to curb the growing death toll.
