In an encouraging development for India's financial sector, asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) are anticipated to experience a notable surge in the redemption rate of security receipts (SRs) for stressed retail assets. According to a recent analysis by Crisil Ratings, this increase, projected at around 600 basis points to 69-71 percent, is expected in the upcoming fiscal year.
ARCs, which specialize in purchasing non-performing assets (NPAs) from financial institutions to clean up their balance sheets, will benefit from robust recovery rates achieved from low-vintage accounts and improved settlement rates across both secured and unsecured asset classes. Significant regulatory changes in settlement guidelines are also likely to expedite recovery actions, thus enhancing efficiency.
Furthermore, the rise in low-vintage borrowers under the Special Mention Account (SMA) category from 5 percent to nearly 25 percent has enabled better collections, leading to full principal recoveries at lower operational costs. The report emphasizes that these improvements are set to bolster ARCs' cash flows and investor confidence in the distressed asset recovery sector.
