The Namami Gange Programme (NGP), a flagship initiative by the central government, unlocks a significant business opportunity valued at Rs 10,000 crore for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firms, as reported by ICRA. The programme has witnessed heightened government focus on water supply and sanitation schemes, propelling the sector's growth.
The ICRA report underscores, "GoI's Namami Gange Programme offers an untapped opportunity worth Rs. 100 billion for EPC players." Notably, the Union Budget for FY2026 earmarked Rs 99,500 crore to the Ministry of Jal Shakti, marking a robust 21 percent annual growth over the last decade.
Initiated in June 2014, the NGP aims to cleanse the Ganga River and its tributaries. Initially allotted Rs 20,000 crore until March 2021, the programme has now entered its second phase, extending to March 2026 with an increased budget of Rs 22,500 crore. As of January 31, 2025, 492 projects have been sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 40,120 crore, with only 307 operational.
Despite hefty allocations, project execution lags. The deadline of March 2026 poses a challenge for timely completion. ICRA suggests an extension could be on the cards, providing further opportunities for EPC companies in sewage and water management sectors under the Namami Gange umbrella. Such an extension could spur more business engagement for the next 2.5 to 3 years.
