Gangtok Tightens Trade Licence Policies to Curb Subletting
The Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) plans to verify shops to prevent subletting of trade licences. Licence renewals for the next fiscal year require traders to conduct business themselves with valid licences, display licences prominently, and provide a new NOC from building owners.

The Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) will initiate a physical check of shops and business establishments starting March 26, aiming to stop the subletting of trade licences within its jurisdiction, according to officials on Monday.
Officials specified that renewing trade licences for the coming financial year depends on traders operating under valid GMC-issued licences. Licences must be clearly displayed at business premises and accompanied by a fresh No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the property owner.
A verification slip will be provided to each licence holder for upload during the renewal process for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The state government recently cautioned that licences may be revoked for local businesses found subletting to non-residents.
