A 78-year-old driver in Hamamatsu, Japan, struck four elementary schoolgirls riding bicycles on Monday, resulting in one fatality and injuries to others. The driver, operating a white mini truck, was taken into custody by local officials after the tragic accident.
The unfortunate incident has intensified concerns over elderly driver-related accidents in Japan. Authorities revealed that the children were hit from behind as the truck veered off the one-lane street into pedestrian space, causing one of the bicycles to be completely mangled.
The driver confessed to striking the children but could not recall the events leading up to the mishap, police reported. In response to such incidents, government efforts to promote road safety awareness are expected to be reinforced.
