High-Stakes Diplomacy: Portugal and China in Strategic Talks Amid Global Tensions
Portugal's Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel is set to meet with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing amid EU concerns over potential trade conflicts with the U.S. and China. This marks a significant diplomatic engagement, eyeing deeper ties despite past tensions over Chinese investments in Portugal.

In a diplomatic visit highlighting complex global trade dynamics, Portugal's Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel will engage in strategic talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Tuesday. This meeting comes as EU member states express concerns over looming trade wars with both Washington and Beijing.
This visit marks the first high-level diplomatic trip from Portugal to China in over five years. As Portugal remains the only Western European nation involved in China's Belt and Road Initiative, the meeting aims to strengthen bilateral relations despite existing tensions.
Notably, Portugal abstained from an EU vote on tariffs against Chinese electric vehicles last year, indicating its openness to Chinese investments, particularly in the EV sector. However, the ongoing ban on Chinese equipment in Portugal's 5G network remains a point of contention.
