PMG Reviews Critical Infrastructure Projects in Eastern India

The review meeting, chaired by Principal Economic Advisor Shri Praveen Mahto, saw active participation from senior officials of Central Ministries, state governments, and project proponents.

The Project Monitoring Group (PMG) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recently conducted an extensive review of critical infrastructure projects in Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha. The evaluation encompassed 19 significant projects, addressing 23 specific issues, collectively representing an investment exceeding INR 63,858 crore.

Among the prominent projects reviewed were initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, particularly the establishment and expansion of Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospitals across Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha. These hospitals play a pivotal role in enhancing healthcare access, providing insured citizens and their families comprehensive medical care including specialized treatments, medication, diagnostics, and hospitalization.

The deliberations emphasized identifying and swiftly resolving critical bottlenecks to ensure projects progress smoothly, meeting established timelines and quality standards.

A significant highlight of the review was the detailed discussion on the Buxar Thermal Power Plant project in Bihar. With an estimated investment of INR 10,439.09 crore and a proposed capacity of 1320 MW, this project is central to enhancing Bihar's power generation capabilities and improving the overall energy infrastructure in the region.

Further, infrastructure projects pertaining to key ministries such as Steel, Coal, Road Transport & Highways, Petroleum & Natural Gas, Railways, and Power were systematically reviewed. The focus was on diagnosing implementation challenges and establishing robust strategies to mitigate delays and streamline project execution.

Shri Praveen Mahto reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to strengthening project monitoring mechanisms, urging all stakeholders, particularly private sector entities, to proactively engage with the Project Monitoring Group through its dedicated digital platform (https://pmg.dpiit.gov.in). He underscored the necessity of enhanced cooperation among Central Ministries, state administrations, and private investors, highlighting that effective collaboration remains integral to driving India's infrastructure growth.

Moving forward, the DPIIT, via the Project Monitoring Group, is committed to continuously facilitating, monitoring, and resolving challenges facing high-impact infrastructure projects. By ensuring timely completion, these initiatives significantly contribute to regional economic development, employment generation, and overall national economic growth.
