Surge in UK Services PMI Offers Respite Amid Economic Challenges
In March, the UK's services PMI reached a seven-month high, offering some relief to finance minister Rachel Reeves amid economic challenges. Despite a downturn in manufacturing due to global trade concerns, the overall composite PMI showed slight economic growth. Firms are responding with automation investment as employment costs rise.

The UK's services sector showed signs of recovery in March, as the S&P Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) hit a seven-month high of 53.2, compared to February's 51.0. This uptick provides a degree of relief for finance minister Rachel Reeves ahead of her critical economic speech this week.
While the services sector improved, the manufacturing PMI fell to its lowest in 18 months at 44.6, as global trade war anxieties spurred by U.S. tariffs took a toll. Export sales in manufacturing experienced their steepest drop since August 2023, compounding the sector's issues.
The composite PMI, which combines both sectors, rose to a six-month high of 52.0. However, firms are reducing jobs in anticipation of higher taxes and wage increases. Reeves faces the challenging task of addressing these economic pressures amid rising costs and anticipated policy shifts.
