At the Maha Kumbh 2025, Reliance Jio's 5G network emerged as the unparalleled frontrunner, offering seamless connectivity amid record-breaking crowds, according to a report by Ookla. The report highlighted Jio's exceptional performance and reliability, setting a new benchmark in the telecom industry.
Reliance Jio delivered the highest 5G median download speed of 201.87 Mbps, significantly outpacing its closest competitor, Airtel, which managed a speed of 165.23 Mbps. Even during the peak congestion of January 26, Jio's 5G network provided markedly faster speeds compared to existing 4G networks, showcasing its robustness.
Furthermore, Jio excelled in terms of 5G availability, boasting an impressive 83.9 percent coverage, nearly double compared to Airtel's 42.4 percent. The report attributed this to Jio's strategic deployment of the 700 MHz low-band spectrum, ensuring extensive coverage across the densely populated mela grounds.
In the realm of 4G performance, Jio maintained leadership, with a median download speed of 18.19 Mbps, outperforming rivals like Airtel and BSNL. The data underscored Jio's commitment to providing consistent, high-speed connectivity across its 4G and 5G services, accommodating high traffic demands efficiently.
During the event's peak periods, Jio's network demonstrated remarkable resilience, handling over 20 million voice calls and 400 million data service requests without faltering. The network's robust performance guaranteed reliable service for all attendees despite the overwhelming number of visitors.
Ookla's analysis further confirmed Jio's dominance, reporting 83.9 percent 5G availability throughout the Maha Kumbh. This achievement was significantly higher than Airtel's 42.4 percent, highlighting Jio's intensive infrastructure rollout in Prayagraj, supported by the 700 MHz spectrum for improved signal penetration across the vast mela grounds.
