Vizhinjam International Seaport has received essential environmental clearance for advanced development stages, as announced by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. This approval accelerates the project's timeline, aiming for completion by 2028, and signifies a critical milestone for Kerala's maritime sector.
The seaport is India's pioneering deep-water container transhipment port, developed by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, part of the Adani Group. In 2024, operations commenced with the arrival of MV San Fernando, marking the port's operational debut.
Equipped with cutting-edge automation technology, the port promises to revolutionize vessel turnarounds and accommodate mega max containerships. Upon completion, Vizhinjam will handle up to 30 lakh TEUs, enhancing its strategic position in global trade. This public-private partnership, initiated in 2016, represents a significant shift from India's reliance on foreign transshipment ports.
