Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited's (BMRCL) recent fare hike has sparked widespread criticism. Managing Director M Maheshwar Rao addressed these concerns by proposing fare 'calibration' to ease the financial burden on commuters while keeping the basic revision framework intact.
In response to public and governmental appeals, including interventions by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Rao pointed out that adjustments are necessary to correct calculation errors and provide relief to nearly three lakh daily commuters. The proposed changes aim to address the excessive fare increases noticed in some travel stages.
Rao emphasized the statutory framework guiding BMRCL's operations, including the requirement for the organization to repay significant loans and maintain infrastructure. Despite facing public ire, BMRCL's adjustments aim to balance financial sustainability and commuter affordability.
