The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will temporarily halt trading on January 9 in memoriam of former President Jimmy Carter. This act continues Wall Street's tradition of mourning the country's leaders, recognizing Carter's profound influence as both a political and humanitarian figure.

Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100, will be honored on this National Day of Mourning declared by President Joe Biden. The NYSE will fly the US flag at half-staff, and a moment of silence was observed by the Nasdaq earlier this week.

Stock market closures to honor late presidents date back to Lincoln and have included FDR, Kennedy, Nixon, and Reagan. The last joint closure for a presidential death was in 2018 for George H.W. Bush.
