Delhi has witnessed an unprecedented surge in power demand, crossing the 5000 MW threshold for the first time in December, the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) reported Tuesday morning. At precisely 10:50 am, the demand peaked at 5213 MW, showcasing the rising energy needs of the capital as temperatures plunge.
According to SLDC forecasts, the city's peak power necessity this winter could exceed 6300 MW, potentially setting a seasonal record akin to the summer of 2024's 8656 MW peak. This increase in demand underscores the challenges faced by Delhi in balancing power supply during extreme weather conditions.
Despite the steep rise, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) have successfully met the demand in their areas. The companies are focused on strategic planning, resilient distribution networks, and have procured over 2000 MW of renewable energy to support this season's power requirements.
In particular, BSES has diversified its power sources with solar, hydro, wind, waste-to-energy, and rooftop solar installations, anticipating that renewables will cover up to 53% of their peak winter load. Officials remain prepared for demand spikes, utilizing advanced forecasting and power banking strategies with other states to ensure grid reliability.
Future forecasts suggest BRPL and BYPL's area power peaks could surpass last winter's record highs of 2600 MW and 1240 MW, respectively. Through a combination of proactive measures, including power banking with states such as Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu, BSES aims to stabilize supply and reciprocate support during peak periods.
