Tata Chemicals Europe (TCEL), a subsidiary of Tata Chemicals, has announced a substantial investment of €60 million (approximately Rs 655 crore) to construct a new pharmaceutical-grade sodium bicarbonate plant in Northwich, UK. The facility aims to increase TCEL's production capacity significantly.
Set to begin construction in 2025, the plant will utilize a patented process incorporating carbon dioxide emissions from energy generation as a raw material. This development is driven by rising demand from pharmaceutical companies for high-purity sodium bicarbonate used in medicines and hemodialysis.
In preparation for this expansion, TCEL's board has approved stopping chemical production at the unprofitable Lostock plant by January 2025, contingent upon local employee consultation laws. Tata Chemicals shares closed at Rs 1,071.60, marking a 2.27% decline on the BSE.
