Crisis in the Skies: Gunfire Forces Spirit Flight to Divert
A Spirit Airlines flight bound for Port-au-Prince was rerouted to the Dominican Republic after being hit by gunfire. A flight attendant was slightly injured, but all passengers are safe. This incident has led to travel suspensions in and out of Haiti due to escalating gang violence.
A Spirit Airlines flight heading to Port-au-Prince came under gunfire, necessitating its diversion to the Dominican Republic on Monday.
The airline confirmed that the aircraft sustained damage and is currently out of service after landing in Santiago, Dominican Republic. A flight attendant was slightly injured by a bullet, as reported by the Miami Herald.
While no passengers were harmed, a video circulated online shows a bullet penetration near the rear exit door impacting an overhead bin. The U.S. embassy in Haiti has issued an advisory noting gang-related travel disruptions from Port-au-Prince. Consequently, Spirit and other airlines have halted flights to and from Haiti. Passengers from the diverted flight will be flown back to Fort Lauderdale.
