The Northeast Natural Gas Grid is on track to become operational by 2026, as confirmed by Rajesh K Mediratta, Managing Director and CEO of the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX). The northeastern region holds significant potential for natural gas production, offering a transformative economic opportunity for India.
With deposits estimated at six million MMSCMD, existing producers have the chance to capitalize on these resources. At a recent 'Gas Market Development for North East' event in Guwahati, Mediratta emphasized that the grid would enhance India's energy security, enabling producers to monetize stranded gas and distribute surplus to other regions.
The development could dramatically reduce import dependency, currently at 50 percent. Mediratta noted that utilizing these gas lines could lead to significant economic savings, supply local industries, and explore export markets like Bangladesh, which already uses natural gas extensively.
