Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the government has no intention of revisiting the 'Shakti' scheme, which provides free bus travel for women in the state.
His statement came after Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar mentioned the possibility of reevaluating the scheme, reflecting feedback from some women willing to pay for rides. Siddaramaiah, however, emphasized the absence of any proposal or government-level discussion for such a move.
The Shakti scheme, one of five key initiatives launched by the Congress government, began on June 11, 2023. By October 18, 2024, it had facilitated 311.07 crore free rides at a cost of Rs 7,507.35 crore. Women's responses to the scheme have been varied, with some supporting its continuation and others expressing willingness to pay.
