Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced that the government is set to review the Shakti scheme after receiving feedback from women commuters who expressed a desire to pay for their bus tickets. The scheme, a pre-election guarantee by the Congress government, provides free travel to women in non-luxury buses across Karnataka.
The review comes as the government has already spent a substantial Rs 7,507.35 crore on these complimentary rides. Shivakumar revealed the development while launching new KSRTC buses, noting that a portion of women reported offers to pay for tickets being repeatedly declined by conductors.
The Deputy CM commended KSRTC's achievements, including numerous awards and major expansions in bus fleets and employment since the Congress government assumed office. He also indicated plans for stakeholders to discuss the potential of securing more cost-effective fuel options for KSRTC.
