Peru Seeks Global Allies for Ambitious Rail Project
Peru is seeking international partnerships to fund a $10 billion rail project linked to the Chancay port development. The plan includes two railways extending from Lima to Ica and Barranca. The initiative will be pitched at the upcoming APEC summit in Lima.
Peru is preparing to propose a $10 billion rail project to foreign governments as part of its expansive development strategy centered on the soon-to-open Chancay port, announced the transportation minister on Tuesday.
The ambitious project plans the construction of two railways: one connecting the capital, Lima, to the city of Ica in the south, and another linking Lima to the city of Barranca in the north. During a press conference held in Chancay, located on Peru's central Pacific coast, Transportation Minister Raul Perez outlined the government's plans, though specific details on the integration with the Chancay port remain undisclosed.
This initiative will be presented to officials from China, the United States, Britain, Canada, France, and Japan during the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima next month. With the Chancay port set to inaugurate in mid-November and commence container shipping to Shanghai soon after, Peru aims to establish itself as a pivotal trade hub for South America-Asia commerce.
